We’ve committed to having at least ten people from our community calling in to tell Gov. Martinez to say “Yes” to support Medicaid, but we’d love to have your support and have as many people as possible join us. You can help by calling in when you’re walking to classes, taking a break at work, hanging out at home, or whenever else you have 30 seconds to spare. Will the Governor refuse the best opportunity we have to get healthcare coverage for 200,000 uninsured New Mexicans? Starting in 2014, Medicaid can be provided to every low-income adult under 138% of the poverty level, including low wage workers and people who recently lost their jobs. But Governor Martinez is undecided about whether to take this opportunity even though it would cost New Mexico nothing and would create jobs and bring economic security to NM. Please call the Governor and ask her to seize the Medicaid opportunity and get coverage for every New Mexican! For more information, please see the flyer from NM Center on Law and Poverty. Making the Call And thank YOU for joining us in improving health for all New Mexicans! ——– Medicare Open Enrollment is October 15 – December 7. Additionally, a curriculum will be developed on relevant and useful information to guide a series of future hands-on workshops for the community. The project is funded by a $74,901 grant from the W.K. Kellogg Foundation of Battle Creek, Mich. To find out more about this exciting project, please refer to our news release. ——– The U.S. government has launched a new immigration program allowing young immigrant workers to get work permits and avoid deportation. What does that mean to you? All that information is here! Unfortunately, there is a very disturbing trend among immigrant children and their undocumented parents! What could this be? “There’s a stunning trend happening within the immigrant community around the country and in New Mexico. Many undocumented parents are fearful not just of immigration officials, but of their own children. Find what this trend is here! ——– Are you curious about whether the formerly known ‘war zone’ (now known as the International District) is still living up to its name? Find out here! “However, in three years, while a few things have changed, much remains the same, according to Albuquerque police statistics.” ——– Got a question on how the healthcare reform will affect you, especially if you are a young adult? Check out this article from the Associated Press. Here’s a teaser: “Right now, Medicaid mostly covers children and low-income adults who are disabled, pregnant or raising kids. But the health care law will push states to expand Medicaid to also cover other adults with incomes up to around $15,000, adjusted for inflation in 2014. That’s designed to account for about half of the 30 million people expected to gain insurance coverage under the overhaul.” —— Driver’s licenses, immigration, and what you need to know brought to you by the Albuquerque Journal. “New Mexico will soon begin using new technology to verify documents presented by driver’s license-seekers as Gov. Susana Martinez’s administration tries new ways to crack down on fraud.”
